What is a Red Tag?
It’s a legally mandated safety notice for a natural gas appliance (like a furnace, water heater, or BBQ line) or piping system. It means the equipment is operating unsafely or violates the gas code.
The Two Types of Red Tags
There are two types of red tags, both of which require attention:
Type A (Immediate Hazard): This indicates a serious safety issue, such as a gas leak or carbon monoxide risk. The gas supply is shut off immediately, and the equipment cannot be used until the issue is professionally repaired or replaced.
Type B (Non-Immediate Hazard): This means the system does not meet current code requirements. You are typically given a deadline (usually 30–42 days) to correct the issue. If it is not resolved in time, your gas service may be shut off.
